Frequently asked questions about FootLab custom orthotics

If you have any other questions, contact us at 651-429-3333. We’d be happy to answer your questions.

Are custom orthotics worth it?

Yes. The human foot has 26 bones and 33 joints. Every bone in the foot grows at a different rate from every other foot on the planet. Our feet are as unique to us as our fingerprints, and they affect the alignment of the feet, knees and lower back. The inserts that come in shoes are designed for comfort, not support. A custom orthotic will help align your feet, knees and lower back.

Where can I get custom orthotics made near me?

The FootLab at Hi Tempo fabricates custom orthotics in one hour. They are staffed by Certified Pedorthists and are licensed by the State of Minnesota. The FootLab serves the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota, Wisconsin and the rest of the 5-state area.

Do I need a prescription for custom orthotics?

No, not at The FootLab. The FootLab does not accept medical insurance (which reduces the cost of their orthotics). However, they do accept Health Savings Accounts. The cost of their orthotics are typically at, or lower than the co-pay for traditional insurance. $399 for adults, ½ price for children 16 and under.

Custom orthotics vs podiatrist orthotics

Podiatrists are Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, DPM. Typically, the scope of a Podiatrists practice does not allow them the time to build orthotics. The usual process in a Podiatrists office is for the Podiatrist to take a mold, cast or image of the foot and send it to an outside lab where a technician will build an orthotic from the mold. The disconnect between the patient and the technician is the difference; the technician does not get to talk with the patient to hear their concerns. They don’t see their shoes and don’t see the patient walk to see if the orthotic is supporting the foot properly. The FootLab staff are Certified Pedorthists. They assess, mold, fabricate and fit their orthotics in one hour which save their clients time and money.

How long does it take to get used to custom orthotics?

About 2-3 days. When you try on your orthotics for the first time you will immediately notice a difference. Your gait will be checked while in The FootLab to make sure the alignment looks correct. They should be comfortable right away but it will take a couple days for your head to get used to the new normal. If the orthotics are not comfortable after 2-3 days they will need an adjustment, which is free.

Can custom orthotics make pain worse?

Typically no. The Direct Mold process used by The FootLab takes a mold of your feet in a weighted, neutral stance. When the orthotic is fit to the shoe the sole of the shoe is a perfectly molded to your feet.

Can I move orthotics between shoes?

Yes and no. Athletic shoes, hiking shoes and casual shoes with laces, yes. Shoes that have less volume with a tighter fit require lower volume orthotics, which The FootLab offers.

Can you wear custom orthotics in dress shoes?

If there is an insert in the shoe that is removeable, The FootLab’s low volume orthotic will replace that insert and will work in dress shoes.

Are custom orthotics HSA or FSA eligible?

Yes. The FootLab accepts HSA and FSA accounts

How often should custom orthotics be replaced?

The “typical” answer is 2-3 years. However, The  FootLab has had elite athletes that can wear them out in 6 months and other clients that are more sedentary that have orthotics that have lasted for 5+ years.
